Recipe type: Cookies
Serves: About 18 cookies
Ingredients
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp orange extract
  • ½ tbsp fresh orange zest
  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 and ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 4 drops red food coloring (optional)
  • 25 drops yellow food coloring (optional)
  • 1 and ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp orange extract
  • 1 tsp fresh orange juice
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 2 tbsp light corn syrup
  • Sprinkles for decorating (optional)
Instructions
  1. Cream the butter and sugar together. Stir in the egg, vanilla and orange extracts, orange zest, and ¼ cup orange juice.
  2. Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt together in a separate bowl. Stir the flour mixture into the wet ingredients until all ingredients are incorporated and a dough forms. Stir in the food colorings (optional).
  3. Place tablespoonfuls of the orange cookie dough on a greased baking sheet, about 1-2 inches apart. Bake on 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Allow the cookies to cool slightly on the baking sheet. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to finish cooling.
  5. Sift the powdered sugar into a mixing bowl. Stir in the ¼ tsp vanilla and ¼ tsp orange extracts, 1 tsp orange juice, milk, and corn syrup. Stir until smooth.
  6. Dip the tops of the cookies into the icing. Place back onto cooling rack (with a sheet of waxed paper underneath to catch any dripping icing). Top the cookies with sprinkles immediately. Allow the cookies to sit until the icing has hardened and set.
