Recipe type: Breakfast
Serves: 8 servings
Ingredients
  • 6-8 slices sourdough bread (or other dense bread), cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 4 eggs
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp salt
  • 1 large Granny Smith apple, peeled and chopped (or other apple variety of your choice)
  • ½ tsp lemon juice
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or almonds
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Maple or pancake syrup for serving
Instructions
  1. Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a small mixing bowl. Stir until it is mixed well. Set aside.
  2. Next, in another mixing bowl, combine the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract and whisk. Add 2 tbsp of the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture to the egg mixture and stir.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and gently fold until all of the bread is covered in egg mixture. Set aside to allow the bread to soak up the eggs, about 10 minutes.
  4. Toss the apples with lemon juice and 1 tbsp of the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  5. Add the apples to the soaked bread. Gently fold until combined.
  6. Transfer the bread and apples to a greased baking dish
  7. Combine the chopped nuts with the remaining brown sugar and cinnamon mixture. Sprinkle the nuts and sugar mixture over the top of the bread and apples.
  8. Bake the Apple French Toast on 375 degrees Fahrenheit, uncovered, for 25-30 minutes.
  9. Cut the baked French toast into 8 slices. Serve with maple syrup and a dusting of sifted powdered sugar.
