Apple Butter

Apple Butter

Apple Butter in a Jar 2

I remember singing a song in kindergarten about how to make applesauce. My teacher was OBSESSED with apples. Everything in the classroom was apples. Do any of my kindergarten peeps remember this one?

“Peel an apple
Cut it up
Cook it in a pot
Once you taste it you will find it’s applesauce you got!”
*(I am unable to find the source of this song and who wrote it-If anyone knows, let me know!)

So why am I talking about apple sauce when we’re making Apple Butter? Jon had talked about his mom making applesauce, and kept suggesting that I make some. I would sing the song to Jon in the grocery store (to annoy him, of course), joking that I knew how to make it because of a song. But, I asked my mother-in-law how she made hers, and it got me to thinking about how I could make my own version. I had every intention of making applesauce, but when I tasted the final product, mine was apple butter!

The Apple Butter is really pretty easy to make. Everything goes right into the slow cooker, and in a couple of hours, you’ve got a big pot of deliciousness! (Plus, the house will smell great too!) The apples are sweetened with brown sugar and get a nice helping of ground cinnamon. You will be eating apple butter on everything from biscuits, to toast, to peanut butter and jelly (subbing in place of the jelly), to croissants, to, yes, even pork chops! I’ve gotten so many ideas to use this apple butter with, I can’t wait!
Ingredients:
8 apples (I used a combination of 4 red delicious and 4 golden delicious apples), peeled, cored, and chopped
½ cup brown sugar
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
¾ cup apple cider

Apple Butter Ingredients

Stir the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a small bowl to combine.

Apples tossed with spices

Toss the sugar mixture together with the chopped apples in a slow-cooker.  Pour the apple cider into the slow-cooker.

slow cooked apples

Cook on low for about 5-6 hours, or until the apples are nice and soft.

blended apple butter

Remove the apples from heat and allow them to cool. Using an emersion blender, blend the apples to your desired consistency.

Finished Apple Butter 2

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Makes about 3 cups.

*I’m going to try freezing some of the apple butter to test how it comes out-I let you know what I find out when I have my results! 🙂
