Double Toasted French Toast

Double Toasted French Toast Cover

We have a cabinet that is full of different types of bread. We have whole wheat bread, English muffins, hamburger buns, hot dog buns, and plain old, cheap white sandwich bread.

I’m sure we’ve all tried to make French toast with the cheap, white bread, and we all know it gets soggy and can fall apart easily in the milk and egg mixture. That ends today!

My new secret for making fabulous French Toast with cheap, white sandwich bread is….wait for it…toasting the bread in the toaster first! That’s right! The bread dries out just enough to grab the egg and milk mixture perfectly. The French toast stays nice and tender on the inside, and a little caramelized cinnamon-sugar adds a little bit of crispy texture to the outside of the French Toast!

Toast

I can’t even begin to tell you how delicious this is!

Ingredients:
6-8 slices, lightly toasted white sandwich bread
2 eggs
¼ cup milk
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
Small pinch salt
Cinnamon-sugar (½ tsp (¼ tsp per side) per slice of toast)
Butter, for serving
Maple or pancake syrup for serving

Cooking spray

French Toast Egg Mixture

Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon together in a dish.

Dip toast into egg mixture

Dip each side of the toast into the egg mixture.

Toast in skillet

Pan fry each side of the egg-covered toast in a preheated skillet on medium heat. Cook for about 1 minute per side, or until golden brown.  I cooked my French toast in a cast-iron skillet sprayed with cooking spray.  I sprayed more cooking spray as needed during the cooking.

Cinnamon Sugar on French Toast

Sprinkle about ¼ tsp of cinnamon sugar on top of the toast. Flip the toast over with a spatula, and cooker for about 15-30 seconds to allow the sugars to caramelize. (The sugar gets really hot, and a little sticky, so use caution). Sprinkle another ¼ tsp on the top of the French toast, and flip again with a spatula to caramelize the sugars on that side for about 15-30 seconds.

Repeat all steps for the remaining pieces of toast. If you have a skillet large enough, you can cook multiple pieces of toast at the same time.

Top each slice of Double Toasted French Toast with a pad of butter and drizzle some sweet maple syrup over the top!
